The Dulhadev Temple, also known as Kunwar Math, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Getting to Dulhadev Temple:
- The temple is located in the Southern Group of Khajuraho Temples, about 1 km from the Jain Group of Temples and 2 km from the Khajuraho Bus Stand.
- You can easily hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi to reach the temple from Khajuraho town.
About the Temple:
- Built around 1100-1150 AD by King Madanvarman of the Chandela dynasty, Dulhadev is the last major temple constructed in the Khajuraho complex.
- Unlike some of the other Khajuraho temples known for their intricate erotic sculptures, Dulhadev is known for its elegance and simplicity. ‘Dulhadeo’ itself translates to "Holy Bridegroom," though the exact connection to Shiva as the bridegroom is not entirely clear.
- The east-facing temple is laid out in a ‘sapta rata’ or seven chariot plan. The outer walls feature carvings depicting celestial figures, but they are not as extensive as other temples in Khajuraho.
- One unique feature of Dulhadev Temple is the beautifully manicured gardens surrounding it, adding to the serenity of the place.
Important Information:
- The temple is open from sunrise to sunset, and there is no entry fee.
- As this is a functioning Hindu temple, dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees) and be respectful of worshippers.
- Photography is generally permitted, but it's always good practice to ask permission before taking photos of people praying.
