Tiruamalai, commonly associated with Tiruvannamalai and sacred Arunachala Hill, is one of Tamil Nadu's most important Shaiva pilgrimage landscapes. The hill and the great Arunachaleswarar Temple at its foot are understood together: worship, architecture and the natural landmark all shape the identity of the town. The district is especially renowned for the Karthigai Deepam festival, when large numbers of devotees gather.
Visitors may explore the temple complex, view Arunachala from around the town or undertake Girivalam, the traditional circumambulation of the hill. The full walking circuit is a substantial undertaking and becomes extremely crowded on full-moon and festival nights. Temple etiquette requires modest dress, footwear removal in designated areas and respectful behaviour around worshippers. Plan around heat and crowds: early morning is generally more comfortable, and major festival dates require extra time, water and carefully arranged transport. Some temple areas may restrict photography or entry, and road controls can operate during large gatherings.
