The Buddhist Caves, Ellora form the earliest group within the Ellora cave complex in Maharashtra. Carved into basalt, these monasteries and shrines preserve prayer halls, monastic rooms and sculptures that trace the development of Buddhist rock-cut architecture before the site's later Hindu and Jain monuments.
Ellora is separate from Ajanta, so travellers should plan the two archaeological sites as different visits. Wear comfortable footwear, carry water and allow several hours for the wider complex. Follow Archaeological Survey rules, avoid touching carvings and check current opening days and ticket arrangements before departure.
