Shivagange, also known as Dakshina Kashi (Southern Kashi) due to the presence of numerous temples, is a rocky hillock located in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka, India. The place holds significance for both religious pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts.
Entrance
You'll be greeted by a large statue of Lord Ganesha at the entrance of Shivagange. A few steps further, you'll find the Gagadeshwar Temple, a Shiva temple.
Interesting Phenomenon
One of the intriguing things to witness here is the ghee turning into butter phenomenon. Devotees pour ghee (clarified butter) on the Shiva Linga housed here, and it is said to solidify into butter almost instantly.
Olakal Theertha
Next in line is the Olakal Theertha, a natural spring that can be accessed through a small opening. It is believed that only those with good intentions can reach the water, and touching the water is said to absolve one's sins.
Cave Temples
As you continue your exploration, you'll encounter two cave temples - Sri Honnammadevi Temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. An annual marriage ceremony is held for these deities in the month of January, during the Sankranti festival. It is claimed that holy water from the Ganges River flows from the rocks above the cave during this time.
Nandi Bull Statues
As you reach the top of the hill, you'll be mesmerized by the sight of two Nandi (bull) statues carved out of a monolithic stone, placed on opposite ends of the hills. The climb to the peak is challenging but offers stunning panoramic views.
Other Temples
There are other temples scattered around Shivagange, including the Paathale Gange, a small temple located on the way down from the peak, and the Sharadambe temple.
Festivals
Shivagange comes alive during the festival of Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated in January. A grand fair is held, and the aforementioned marriage ceremony of Sri Gangadhareshwara and Sri Honnammadevi takes place. Another significant festival here is Shivaratri, which usually falls in February or March.
Tips
- Wear comfortable shoes for climbing the hillock.
- Carry water bottles as there are limited options available on the hill.
- The temples have specific timings, so it's best to check before you visit. As per my information, the Sri Shiva Ganga temple is open from 9:30 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 7 pm.
- Photography is allowed inside the temples.
