Naxos Old Town forms the historic heart of Chora, the island’s capital and main port. Whitewashed houses and narrow lanes rise from the waterfront toward the Venetian-era Kastro, where fortified residences and religious buildings preserve evidence of the Duchy of the Aegean. Shops, cafes and homes keep the district active beyond its monuments.
Naxos Old Town is best explored on foot, with secure footwear for polished stones, steps and uneven alleys. The maze-like lanes are part of its character, but travelers should allow extra time when returning to the port. Churches and residential courtyards require respectful behavior, and private property should not be entered for photographs. Summer afternoons can be hot and crowded, making morning or evening walks more comfortable.
