The Madhavaraya Temple is a 16th-century Hindu temple located within the Gandikota Fort, in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Dedicated to Krishna, also known as Madhava, the temple is also known as Madhava Perumal Temple or Madhavaraya Swamy Temple. The Government of India has designated it as a Monument of National Importance.
The temple is considered to be the most magnificent structure in Gandikota, and perhaps the entire region.
Getting There
The Madhavaraya Temple is situated 1 kilometer from the Gandikota Bus Stop. You can take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to get to the temple.
Inside the Temple
The Madhavaraya temple displays Dravidian architecture, with many sculptures of Hindu Gods and everyday rituals of common people carved on its pillars and walls. The five-story gopuram, or gateway tower, dominates the skyline of Gandikota.
Inside the temple complex, you will find:
- Kalyana Mandapam - A hall used for weddings
- Ranga Mandapam - A pillared hall
- Panashala - A shelter with a watering place for animals
- Alankarashala - A dressing room for the deity
- Alvarula temple dedicated to Alvars, the poet-saints of Tamil Nadu
- The main sanctum sanctorum, which once housed the idol of Lord Vishnu. The idol is no longer here, but devotees still visit the temple to worship.
Best Time to Visit
The temple is open from dawn to dusk. The best time to visit the temple is during the winter months, from November to February, when the weather is pleasant. You can also time your visit to coincide with one of the temple's festivals, such as Vaikunta Ekadashi or Ratha Saptami.
