Lake Lou Yaeger is a 1,300-acre reservoir located in Montgomery County, Illinois, about 7 miles from the town of Litchfield. It was created by damming the West Fork of Illinois's Shoal Creek and serves the purposes of recreation, sport fishing, and flood control.
The lake is approximately 8 miles long and 0.5 miles wide. It's a popular spot for boating, as there are no speed or power limits enforced, unlike many other lakes in central and southern Illinois. Anglers can enjoy fishing for bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. The lake's healthy fish population also attracts various wildlife, including bald eagles, which have been nesting at the lake since 2005.
Visitors can access the lake via Interstate 55, which passes close by to the north of Litchfield. The municipality of Litchfield operates the largest park on the lake, the 266-acre Shoal Creek Conservation Area. This park features oak-hickory woodlands and prairie patches, offering 1.15 miles of trails suitable for walking, biking, or horseback riding.
In addition to boating and fishing, visitors can enjoy various activities around the lake. The surrounding area has over 4,600 acres reserved for recreation and conservation, providing opportunities for hiking, biking, and equestrian activities. There's also a sandy beach for swimming and camping facilities for those who wish to stay overnight.
