Lake Constance, officially Rotopōhueroa / Lake Constance, is a remote alpine lake in Nelson Lakes National Park. It lies in the upper Sabine valley and feeds nearby Rotomairewhenua / Blue Lake through natural landslide debris. The setting is reached on a demanding backcountry journey rather than a short sightseeing drive, with mountain weather and rugged terrain shaping the experience.
Lake Constance has deep cultural significance to Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō and is regarded as tapu. Visitors must not enter, touch or take water from the lake, and equipment should not be placed in it. These restrictions uphold its cultural values and help protect the water from invasive lindavia.
