Reaching the Temple
The Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple is a popular Shiva temple located about 12-15 kilometers from Alibaug, perched atop a hill. Be prepared for a climb - there are anywhere from 5000 to 650 steps depending on the source you consult, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. There's limited availability of refreshments along the way, so plan accordingly.
The good news is the effort is rewarded with stunning views, especially during the monsoon season (June-October) when the landscape turns lush green and you might even find yourself walking through clouds.
The Temple
The temple itself is a beautiful example of Hoysala architecture, with a main sanctum housing a four-foot-long Shiva lingam. There's also a Sabhamandapa, a hall for gatherings, and a Pushkarni, a water tank that traditionally held water year-round (though some sources say it's no longer accessible to visitors).
Other Interesting Sights
The Kanakeshwar temple complex includes shrines dedicated to Lord Balram Krishna, Hanuman, and Devi Putrabai. Make sure to explore these while you're there.
Tips
- Start your climb early, ideally reaching the base by 9 or 10 am to avoid the heat.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water.
- Be aware of the number of steps - some sources say 5000, some say 650. Plan accordingly for your fitness level.
- The monsoon season offers scenic beauty but can be slippery underfoot.
