Jaswant Garh, also known as the Jaswant Garh War Memorial, is a historic site located near the town of Tawang in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh . It's a place that pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, a soldier of the Indian Army who fought against the invading Chinese troops in the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
A Site Steeped in History
The site is named after Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, who along with his comrades, fought valiantly for 72 hours against the Chinese at this very spot. His unwavering defense held the position and ultimately forced the Chinese to retreat. Rifleman Rawat was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest military decoration for bravery in the face of the enemy.
The Memorial
The Jaswant Garh War Memorial itself is a building resembling a temple, with a camouflage paint scheme honoring the military significance of the location . Inside, visitors will find a portrait of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, along with his military uniform, cap, watch, and belt. These artifacts offer a tangible connection to the soldier and the sacrifices made by him and his fellow soldiers.
A Place of Remembrance
Jaswant Garh is a popular tourist destination, but more importantly, it serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in the line of duty. Visitors from all over India come to pay their respects to Rifleman Rawat and his comrades. The Indian Army maintains a presence at the memorial, with some soldiers stationed there year-round, even in the harsh winter conditions. A small canteen, run by the army personnel, offers free tea and coffee to visitors to help keep them warm.
Planning Your Visit
