The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, also fondly referred to as Sarusajai Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium located in Lokhra, Guwahati, Assam, India. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, the stadium boasts a seating capacity of around 21,600 spectators and is a prime venue for athletic events and football matches.
Inaugurated in 2007, the stadium has played host to several prestigious sporting events including the 2007 National Games of India, the 2016 South Asian Games and even the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The stadium underwent major renovations in 2014 to become the home ground for NorthEast United FC, a Guwahati-based Indian Super League club. It even witnessed the highest attendance for a football game in Assam when 32,844 spectators cheered for NorthEast United against Chennaiyin FC in an ISL match back in 2016.
Apart from being a sporting hub, the stadium also hosts musical concerts by famous Indian artists and is a popular tourist destination for visitors to Guwahati. The stadium complex is equipped with modern facilities including floodlights, a digital scoreboard, a synthetic athletic track, a FIFA-approved natural grass football playing surface, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and a multi-purpose hall.
