The Goindwal Baoli, located about 50 kilometers southeast of Amritsar, Punjab, is more than just a stepwell. It's a historical and spiritual landmark for Sikhs, built in the 16th century by Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru.

A Sacred Descent: The centerpiece of the Baoli is the 84-step stairway leading down to the water. Each step holds significance, symbolizing the 100,000 life forms that make up the 8.4 million different existences believed to exist on the planet. The stairs are divided into two paths, one for men and one for women.
Spiritual Significance: Sikhs believe that taking a bath in the cool waters of the Baoli and reciting the Japji Sahib prayer at each step brings them closer to achieving moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
