Draksharamam is a town located in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is famous for the Draksharama Temple, one of the five Pancharama Kshetras, which are sacred to the Hindu god Shiva. The temple is also known as Dakshina Kashi, which means "southern Kashi" (Varanasi), signifying its importance as a place of immense religious importance.
The town is situated on the eastern bank of the River Godavari, and the scenery around the temple is pleasant. The road journey to the temple from nearby Rajahmundry (40 kilometers away) is beautiful.
Day 1:
- Reach Rajahmundry by train or flight.
- Take a taxi or bus to Draksharama (around 40 kilometers).
- Check into a hotel near the temple. In the evening, visit the Bhimeswara Swamy Temple, the main attraction of Draksharama.
Day 2:
- Spend the morning exploring the temple complex. The temple has a unique architecture and is built like a fort. There are two prakaras (outer courtyards) and a two-storied mandapa (hall). The highlight of the temple is the Shiva linga, which is nearly 9 feet tall. The top part of the linga is visible from the first floor.
- In the afternoon, visit the Manikyamba Temple, one of the 18 Shakti Peethas in India.
- In the evening, you can relax at your hotel or explore the local markets.
Day 3:
- On your last day in Draksharama, you can visit some of the other temples in the town, such as the Ramachandra Swamy Temple and the Gopala Krishna Temple.
- You can also take a boat ride on the River Godavari.
- In the afternoon, start your journey back to Rajahmundry.
