Coal Creek Falls

Coal Creek Falls is a beautiful and easily accessible waterfall located in Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park near Seattle, Washington.

Getting There:

1. From Seattle: Head east on I-90.
2. Take Exit 13: Take the West Lake Sammamish/SE Newport Way exit.
3. Turn Right: Turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Lakemont Boulevard.
4. Stay Straight: After one mile, continue straight through the stoplight.
5. Trailhead on the Left:The trailhead is on the left (east) side of the road after an additional 1.8 miles along Lakemont Boulevard, which turns into Newcastle-Coal Creek Road. The turnoff for the trail is located along a sharp bend in the road. There is a large blue King County sign that is hard to miss at the entrance. 1

The Hike:

1. Red Town Trail: From the trailhead parking lot, start on the Red Town Trail.
2. Cave Hole Trail: After about 500 feet, you'll reach a junction. Turn left onto the Cave Hole Trail.
3. Coal Creek Falls Trail: Follow the Cave Hole Trail for about half a mile, then turn right onto the Coal Creek Falls Trail.
4. To the Falls: Continue on the Coal Creek Falls Trail for another half mile, and you'll reach the falls.

Trail Conditions:

• The trail is generally well-maintained and easy to follow.
• It can be muddy, especially in the winter and spring.
• There are some stairs along the way.
• The trail is mostly forested, providing shade and a pleasant hiking experience.

Coal Creek Falls:

• The waterfall is about 28 feet tall.
• It's a beautiful spot to take photos and enjoy the scenery.
• The falls are at their fullest during the rainy season (winter and spring).
• They can dry up to a trickle in the summer.

Things to Note:

• The parking lot can fill up quickly, especially on weekends.
• There are restrooms and picnic tables at the trailhead.
• Dogs are allowed on the trail, but must be kept on a leash.
• Be sure to stay on the trail, as there are some old mine shafts and other hazards in the area.
