Champaran, also known as Champaranya, is a small village located about 60 kilometers from Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, India. It is a place of religious significance, particularly for followers of the Vallabh sect, as it is believed to be the birthplace of Saint Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya, the founder of the sect. The village is also known for its temples and its annual fair.
Religious Significance
Champaran is primarily known as the birthplace of Saint Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya. A beautiful temple complex has been constructed in his honor, which is a major pilgrimage site for followers of the Vallabh sect, especially during the Hindu month of Shravan. The temple complex is also referred to as Sudamapuri and is considered a Vaishnava peeth (pilgrim site).
There are two main temples dedicated to Saint Vallabhacharya in Champaran:
- The Prakatya Baithakji Mandir: This temple is believed to mark the exact spot where Saint Vallabhacharya was born.
- The Mool Prakatya (more commonly known as Chatti Baithak): This temple is located near the Prakatya Baithakji Mandir and is believed to mark the birthplace of Saint Vallabhacharya's mother.
Other Attractions
Champeshwar Mahadeva Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be quite ancient. It houses a rare Shiva linga.
Annual Fair: Champaran holds an annual fair in the month of Magh, which attracts a large number of visitors, especially followers of the Pushtimarg sect. The fair is a vibrant celebration with religious ceremonies, cultural performances, and food stalls.

Champaran is a small village and does not have its own railway station or airport. The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, which is about 60 kilometers away. The nearest railway station is Mahasamund, which is about 30 kilometers away. Buses are available from Raipur and Mahasamund to Champaran.
Best Time to Visit
Champaran can be visited throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is during the annual fair in the month of Magh (January-February) or during the birth anniversary of Saint Vallabhacharya, which is celebrated on the eleventh day of Baisakh (April-May).
