Cable Car Museum occupies Wellington's original cable-car winding house beside the Kelburn terminus. The displays trace the development of the city's hillside transport system and include two preserved grip cars. Visitors can also see the historic winding machinery that hauled the earlier cars between the harbour-side city and Kelburn until the original system was retired in 1978.
The Cable Car Museum is at 1A Upland Road and is easily combined with a ride from Lambton Quay, views over Wellington and a walk through the Botanic Garden. General admission is free, although guided experiences may carry a charge.
