Perched atop a flat-topped hill overlooking Bhaderwah, the Bhaderwah Fort, also known as Ratangarh Fort, is a historical and cultural gem. The fort offers a panoramic view of the valley below, with a picturesque backdrop of pine trees.
The fort itself is comprised of two distinct sections:
- Upper Fort: This section consists of two separate tower blocks and is believed to have been built by King Nagpal in the medieval period.
- Lower Fort: Constructed in the 19th century by the Chamba kings, this section features four octagonal towers and a surrounding rampart wall.
Reaching the Fort:
- You can enjoy a leisurely 20-minute walk up a path-stairway that starts beside the Jamia Mosque.
- While a road leads up to the fort, it's known for being full of potholes and switchbacks, making the walk a more enjoyable option.
Though the fort has served multiple purposes throughout history, including housing a prison until recently, it is now a popular tourist destination. Exploring the fort allows you to step back in time and soak in the beauty of the Bhaderwah Valley.
