Akhnoor Fort: A Historical Gem on the Banks of the Chenab
Nestled 28 kilometers from Jammu city, Akhnoor Fort stands tall on a cliff overlooking the majestic Chenab River. This fort, more than just a military structure, boasts a rich history dating back over 5,000 years.
A Legacy Built Over Time
Archaeological excavations reveal that the fort's foundation rests on an ancient town from the Harappan civilization. Construction of the fort itself began in the 18th century by Raja Tegh Singh and was completed by his successor, Raja Alam Singh, in 1802. The fort witnessed a significant event in 1822 when Maharaja Ranjit Singh crowned Maharaja Gulab Singh at the fort's Jia Pota ghat on the Chenab's banks.
Architectural Grandeur
Akhnoor Fort is a prime example of Indian military architecture. Imagine high fortification walls with strong bastions guarding the perimeter at regular intervals. These walls are crowned with battlements, a testament to the fort's defensive purpose. Watchtowers with two stories stand tall at the corners, also adorned with battlements and merlons.
Step Inside the Fort
As you enter the fort, you'll be greeted by a grand two-storied palace built by Raja Alam Singh. The walls of the palace courtyard are adorned with beautiful arches, and some are even decorated with exquisite mural paintings.
