A Landmark Fountain in the Heart of Ooty
Nestled in the heart of Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India, you'll find Adam's Fountain, a charming historic landmark that captures the town's colonial past. Built in 1886, the fountain stands proudly at Charring Cross, a bustling junction in the center of Ooty.
A Tribute to a Popular Governor
The fountain was constructed as a public memorial to a well-regarded Governor of Ooty, though the exact person it honors remains debated. Some believe it's dedicated to W.P. Adam, a governor of Madras who passed away in Ooty five years before the fountain's construction.
Funded by the People
Interestingly, the construction of Adam's Fountain was funded entirely through public contributions, reflecting the fondness the community held for the governor it memorializes. The total cost amounted to roughly Rs. 13,000 to Rs. 14,000.
A Picturesque Stop
The fountain itself is a beautiful sight, crafted from stone and featuring a tiered design. In the evenings, the fountain comes alive with a captivating light show, making it an even more mesmerizing attraction for visitors.
A Convenient Location
Located right in the center of Ooty's main market area, Adam's Fountain is a perfect place to take a break from shopping and sightseeing. You can capture some lovely photos with the fountain as a backdrop, or simply relax and soak in the atmosphere of this historic landmark.
A Bit of History on the Move
The fountain wasn't always at its current location. Originally, it was planned to be placed near the Ooty market. However, due to water supply limitations, it was eventually moved to its present spot at Charring Cross in 1898. Unfortunately, this move necessitated the removal of a well-known old tree that had served as a landmark in Charring Cross for many years.
Today, Adam's Fountain stands as a testament to Ooty's rich history and enduring charm. It's a must-see for anyone visiting this popular hill station.
