Osh is one of Central Asia's oldest cities and a major cultural and commercial centre in southern Kyrgyzstan. Its most important landmark is Sulayman-Too, the sacred mountain and UNESCO World Heritage Site rising directly above the city. Below it, the long-established Jayma Bazaar, neighbourhood mosques and busy food culture reflect Osh's position on historic Silk Road routes and its mix of Kyrgyz, Uzbek and other communities.
Allow two days for the mountain, museum areas, bazaar and an unhurried exploration of the centre. The ascent of Sulayman-Too includes steps and exposed sections, so wear secure shoes, carry water and avoid the hottest part of the day. Osh also serves as a gateway to the Alay Valley, but mountain journeys require suitable transport, weather planning and experienced local support. Respect worshippers and photography preferences, guard belongings in crowded markets and confirm border, road and regional travel conditions before longer excursions.
